Audio Review # 25 | Limit Distractions with GetConcentrating

Screen Shot 2014-12-02 at 12.41.37 PMOverview

Concentrate is another app in the limit distractions family.  Our laptops have way too many fun things competing for our attention and for most of us (at least me) it is hard to shut that off when I should focus on work.

The Concentrate Mac OS app is a wonderful solution for our distractions.  Concentrate lets you, the user, decide what apps you want to block and shut off. Basically you customize the program to filter or block whatever you find distracting.  Next you switch on the program and watch the timer go as you live in distraction free pleasure.

While this is a great way for students to learn to manage themselves, it is still very easy for them to game the system and simply shut it off when they want to have some fun on the side.  Teachers should realize that this program is best as part of a comprehensive effort to teach students to limit their own distractions while working on a device.

Sample Uses

I use it in “sprints” with students.  I ask them to turn it on for 25 minutes then they get a five minute break.  During that 25 minutes they are not allowed to turn it off.

Do I plan to use it?

Yes!  Great program. That, along with Self Control App are a couple of super choices.

Commitment and Learning Curve

Medium.  It takes a little while to learn how to use it and how to set it up.

Best for ES MS or HS?

Best for MS for sure.  HS students can learn to use it on their own.

Free for the first 60 hours of use, then $29 one time fee.
