Tech Talk Roundtable 63 | Everybody Has a Skill

ChrisJamie and Michael discuss the articles of the week and share their edtech tips.

Articles of the Week

  1. Microsoft’s news release stated, “The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises Halo, Forza, Fable and more.” Xbox head Phil Spencer’s blog said, “Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms.” And Mojang’s own blog post noted, “We’re confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.”
  2. sk any college instructor about online professor-rating sites such as Rate My Professors, and she will insist that not only does she find the anonymous student-rant irrelevant to her career, she hasn’t so much as peeked at her own ratings—in fact, she doesn’t even know if she’s on there.
  3. Perhaps it’s time we start thinking of future workforce opportunities – and our corresponding investments – in terms of C for computers and then E, M and S for engineering, math and science. “CEMS” isn’t as pretty an acronym, but it’s a lot more accurate.
  4. Predictive analytics is growing rapidly in popularity among school district leaders. K-12 school districts are collaborating with universities and businesses (IBM, Dell) at an accelerating pace, using advanced analytics to create innovative new models and tools to advance students’ performance. Many school districts across the nation are now using predictive analytics to predict and monitor student performance to improve learning.
